These fishes are commonly caught in the waters of the South China Sea and are often referred to as the “poor man’s fish” due to their affordability. Galunggong is typically smoked, pan-fried, or grilled, and it pairs wonderfully with rice, sometimes served with vinegar or calamansi as a dip. In fact, there’s even a running joke about changing the national fish title from Bangus (Milkfish) to Galunggong!
